Four expatriates have been arrested at Tontokrom in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti region for engaging in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Two of the arrested persons, Coemwotit Putats and Chepainyi Serchii are reported to be Ukrainians, while Farid Issaer as well another unidentified man are believed to be from Russia.
The aforementioned four were arrested after being spotted engaging in illegal mining activities when the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amemu visited some mining sites in the community.
The Daily Guide newspaper reports that the mining company run by the expatriates was being fronted by three local companies, namely; Kasmil Mining Company Limited, K. Afriyie and Sons Precious Metal Company and King Solomon Mining Company.
The report further suggests that illegal mining has been prevalent in Tontokrom for over two decades, leading to the contamination of the community’s water bodies.
Speaking on the development, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amemu lamented the effects of galamsey activities in the community, while calling on the security services to help stop the illegal operations.
